Abu Dhabi and the Rest?

Abu Dhabi and the Rest?
Have, as suggested by others, re-posted this here.
The Situation:
Arriving on a cruise from Singapore which will have called at Muscat and Dubai prior. I am getting the definite impression from reading archived posts, etc., that there isn't a lot to see in Abu Dhabi and that the majority of architecture, etc., in the Emirates is "new."
We are not interested in visiting any "shopping malls" and due to the length of our travels (more than three weeks with the cruise and a week in Japan prior) we are considering simply returning home to the US. The departure times for non-stops look like fun.
Perhaps simply staying in an Abu Dhabi hotel for a night or so.
I wish we could extend the trip to include Egypt but could not do that justice I suspect.
If I'm missing something, or a LOT of "something" appreciate any comments and thank you.

I've not been there but on a cruise in Burma, of all places, I met a British academic who was very involved in sourcing objects for the new Islamic art museum in Abu Dhabi. That's all I know, I am afraid, but might be interesting.....
Oman is supposed to have great scenery. Your cruise sounds just fabulous!
Welcome break from kitchen renovations!

Thanks, Ekscrunchy for your thoughts. The cruise makes stops in India and Sri Lanka as well as Thailand so there'll be plenty to chose from. A cruise was chosen because it provides some elements which my Husbear really needs for mental stimulation and the Japan segment (we've been before) is mainly so he can return, mainly to Tokyo to do some very specific things).
As time runs out for him we have had to change the way in which we travel and some of the destinations, many of which are familiar repeats such as opera performances in various European cities. It is all very hard in a way but I believe in "For better or worse" so we soldier on.

I lived in Dubai for a few years and visited Abu Dhabi a few times, though I haven't been in the last five years. That said, even while newer construction, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque is worth staying a night in Abu Dhabi for. I visited at night as it was nearing completion of construction, and loved my visit.
