I'm finding that in order to get RT airfare from Johannesburg to Mauritius for less than $1000 US (gulp!) we have to stay 5 nights. We have 4 nights at the Oberoi that we got as a deal (practically a gift) and can't afford another night there. What to do??

Sell the trip to someone who can afford the air and an extra night's stay! Bye the way, how much is the cost for the extra night? And is the $1,000 fare for one or two people? Even if $500 each, that's very high!
While I've never done a bid for some package deals available on sites such as LuxuryLinks, the advise is always to check out all "the extras" before bidding; in this case someone giving your a gift. Sorry to say, but it's not such a great gift if it's going to cost you more money than you can afford.
Anne, move to another place for one night. Don't miss your chance of going to Mauritius. There are many inexpensive yet beautiful places in Mauritius. Unless you HAVE to stay ONLY in places such as Oberoi hotels
"HAVE to stay ONLY in places such as the Oberoi"???
Oh dear lord no, I've never been to a place like the Oberoi in my life- This is part of a honeymoon trip, so we REALLY want to go and have the experience- can you recommend an inexpensive hotel in Mauritius for the extra night? Perhaps near the airport as our flight leaves early on our last day? Thank you!
There is one hotel near the airport where we stay when we have an early flight. Usually they have a rate around $250.00 but if you ask them for a special rate and tell them you are on a strict honeymoon budget I bet they might give you a room for less. Their rates include breakfast and dinner. There a few beaches on the properties. All activities, except diving, are included. Rooms, beaches, service, swiming pool and grounds are beautiful. Just please when you get there do not try to compare this place with the Oberoi. It is a different place. They have a shuttle, for fee, to the airport. You may want to ask about it. We get always very good rates when we ask for a special deal in our e-mail directed to the hotel. The name of this place is the Shandrani Hotel.
